2027 Elections: INEC Restores Suppressed Constituencies in Four States, Fixes Dates for Party Primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored some previously suppressed constituencies in Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi states following court judgments directing the commission to do so.

INEC also announced that political parties will conduct primary elections for the restored constituencies between June 16 and June 25, 2026, ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Haruna, the restoration of the constituencies was in compliance with court orders mandating the commission to reinstate the affected constituencies.

The restored constituencies in Benue State are Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev-Tiev), Makurdi III (South East) and Gboko III.

In Delta State, the restored constituencies are Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II.

Jigawa State has Aujara Constituency restored, while the constituencies restored in Kogi State are Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa-Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba-Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igala Ogwa and Ogugu.

Haruna said the commission had fixed June 16 to June 25 for political parties to conduct their primaries in the restored constituencies to facilitate their participation in the 2027 General Elections, particularly in the nomination of candidates.

He stated that all other timelines and activities contained in the revised timetable and schedule of activities already released by INEC for the 2027 General Elections would also apply to the restored constituencies.

The national commissioner further advised political parties to submit notices of their primaries to the commission before the scheduled dates in view of the special arrangement.

Haruna reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to ensuring credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes across the country.
