Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has said Nigerian workers are experiencing “renewed hardship” rather than the promised renewed hope, as the country marks the 2026 International Workers’ Day.
In a statement released on Friday, Atiku commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and unwavering commitment to national development despite prevailing economic challenges. He, however, expressed concern over what he described as worsening living conditions, rising inflation, and declining purchasing power.
According to him, many workers across the country are struggling to meet basic needs due to the high cost of food, transportation, and essential services, stressing that the current realities fall short of expectations.

“Instead of renewed hope, Nigerian workers are confronted with renewed hardship,” Atiku stated, noting that the economic climate has continued to put pressure on salaries and overall welfare.
The former Vice President called on the Federal Government to prioritise policies that will ease the burden on workers, including improved wages, better welfare packages, and sustainable economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy.
He further urged leaders at all levels to remain committed to policies that promote job creation, protect workers’ rights, and ensure a more inclusive and people-centered economy.
Atiku also reiterated the importance of good governance, accountability, and strategic planning in addressing the challenges facing the workforce, adding that Nigerian workers deserve dignity, fair compensation, and a supportive environment to thrive.
He concluded by encouraging workers not to lose hope, assuring them that their sacrifices and contributions remain vital to the growth and future of the nation.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate Workers’ Day, the message highlights growing concerns among stakeholders about the economic realities facing the nation’s workforce.
