Governor Seyi Makinde has cautioned Oyo traditional rulers against partisan alignment ahead of the 2027 elections. The message is clear: engage in politics and you forfeit the privileges of the throne.

According to the video sighted by Egalitarian Voice, Makinde gave this cautionary note on Saturday while speaking at the newly commissioned palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola Ajobo Olurin I, during the monarch’s first coronation anniversary and the conferment of honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.

The governor urged traditional rulers to remain neutral and concentrate on their traditional responsibilities, particularly the preservation of peace, unity and development in their domains.

According to him, the traditional institution occupies a sensitive position in society and should not be dragged into partisan political contests.

Makinde said monarchs were expected to serve as fathers to all political actors and residents in their domains, irrespective of their political affiliations.

He warned that any traditional ruler who chooses to openly participate in partisan politics should be prepared to be regarded as a politician rather than being treated solely as a traditional ruler.

The governor said: “If you want to play politics, then you should be ready to be treated as a politician. But if you want to remain a traditional ruler, then stay away from politics.”

He, however, stressed that such support should not be interpreted as an invitation for traditional rulers to become partisan actors in the political process.

The governor’s warning comes against the backdrop of increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and aspirants already mobilising supporters and courting influential individuals and traditional institutions across the state.

Makinde also called on traditional rulers to continue to promote peaceful coexistence and support initiatives capable of improving the welfare of their subjects.

He said the traditional institution remained an important pillar of governance, especially at the grassroots, and should therefore be protected from unnecessary political divisions.

He further stressed the need for issues based campaign devoid of character assassination and political blackmail while urging candidates to carefully sell their programs and agenda to the people.
