The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all its affiliated workers to stay away from their workplaces due to the ongoing political unrest in the state. This decision was made to protect workers from potential dangers, as the state’s local government elections have sparked tensions, Egalitarian Voice reports.
The NLC chairperson, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, emphasized that workers’ safety remains a top priority, and they cannot operate in an insecure environment. The directive is a precautionary measure to prevent any harm or violence against workers.
The Osun NLC’s decision comes after Governor Ademola Adeleke swore in newly elected council members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite warnings from the Nigeria Police. The situation has been interpreted differently by the ruling PDP and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to increased tensions.
The NLC has reaffirmed its commitment to defending workers’ rights and maintaining neutrality in politics. However, they will not compromise on ensuring the safety and security of their members.
