Flash: FG Approves Major NYSC Reforms, Extends Orientation Camp to Six Weeks, Replaces Military Leadership

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing far-reaching changes aimed at transforming the scheme into a more skills-driven and development-oriented programme.
A major highlight of the reforms is the extension of the NYSC orientation course from the current three weeks to six weeks. The government said the additional period will strengthen vocational training, entrepreneurship development, and career preparedness for corps members.
As part of the restructuring, the Federal Government has also approved the replacement of military leadership in the administration of the scheme with a civilian leadership structure.
In another significant policy shift, military drills and parade exercises traditionally conducted during the orientation camp have been scrapped. The long-standing Passing-Out Parade (POP), held at the end of the one-year national service, will equally be replaced with a graduation ceremony.
The reforms further include the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect a modern, professional identity in line with the scheme’s new direction.
The Federal Government said the reforms are part of broader efforts to reposition the NYSC as a platform for skills acquisition, innovation, entrepreneurship, and national development, while aligning the scheme with Nigeria’s evolving economic and youth empowerment priorities.

The implementation timeline and other operational details of the reforms are expected to be communicated by the appropriate authorities.
