Breaking: Kwankwaso Courted by NDC Leaders Amid ADC Crisis

A fresh dimension has emerged in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape as prominent figures of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) intensify efforts to woo former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, away from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The latest move followed a high-level visit by the NDC National Deputy Chairman, Muhammad Rabiu Sabo Bakin, alongside the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Ahmad Waya. The delegation reportedly met with Kwankwaso in a strategic engagement aimed at persuading the influential northern politician to defect to the NDC.

Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that the NDC leadership used the opportunity to highlight what they described as the deepening leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging Kwankwaso to reconsider his political alignment. According to insiders, Bakin stressed that remaining in a party grappling with internal discord could undermine Kwankwaso’s political influence and long-term ambitions.

The NDC, in its pitch, positioned itself as a stable and accommodating platform, assuring Kwankwaso of full integration into its leadership structure. Party officials were said to have pledged that both Kwankwaso and his extensive grassroots network—particularly his loyal “Kwankwasiyya” movement—would be granted significant roles and influence within the party hierarchy.

This development comes at a time when Nigeria’s opposition space is witnessing heightened realignments ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle. Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and a key power broker in the North, remains a prized political asset whose allegiance could reshape coalition dynamics.

While Kwankwaso has yet to make any public declaration regarding the overtures, analysts note that the move by the NDC signals an aggressive strategy to consolidate opposition forces and attract heavyweight politicians capable of mounting a formidable challenge in future elections.

Efforts to get official confirmation from Kwankwaso’s camp were unsuccessful as of press time. However, close associates indicate that consultations are ongoing, suggesting that any potential decision could have far-reaching implications for both the ADC and the broader opposition movement.

As the political temperature gradually rises, all eyes remain on Kwankwaso, whose next move may significantly alter the balance of power within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
