Nigerians React After Buhari Declares Support For Southern Presidency in 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown his weight behind the emergence of a southern contender as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries.
This comes after President Buhari said on Saturday that in the 2023 general elections, power should be rotated to the south.
The President said this at an Aso Rock Villa dinner with presidential hopefuls from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This comes after ten northern governors on the ruling party’s platform requested that President Buhari support a southerner for the party’s presidential ticket.
In a statement, the northern governors also recommended northern presidential contenders to drop out of the race ahead of the party’s presidential primary on June 6th.
President Buhari was advised by the governors to pick his favorite presidential candidate from the region.
The governors that made the call include, Aminu Bello Masari, Abubakar Sani Bello, Abdullahi Sule, Babagana Zulum, Nasir El-Rufai, Muhammad Yahaya, Bello Matawalle, Simon Lalong, former Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko, Abdullahi Ganduje, Bagudu Atiku.
While some Nigerians applaud the development, others see it as a political maneuver to pacify Nigerians and defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has chosen a northerner as its presidential candidate for 2023.
