Human rights activist and presidential hopeful, Omoyele Sowore, has renewed his call for a ₦500,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, questioning why concerns about inflation are often raised when discussions centre on improving workers’ salaries.
Speaking at the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Sowore argued that the inflation argument appears to be selectively applied against workers, particularly those who risk their lives in service to the country. The 2026 NBA conference is holding in Port Harcourt from August 21 to 28.
According to Sowore, critics had previously argued that his proposal for a ₦500,000 minimum wage would worsen inflation. However, he questioned why the same concern is not expressed over the huge earnings of political office holders and alleged large-scale corruption.

- “I am the guy who proposed ₦500,000 minimum wage, and some people said it would cause inflation, and I am asking, why is it that your senators who do nothing are taking ₦30 million per month, it doesn’t cause inflation?
- “Why is it that a governor can steal ₦1 trillion that we all know, and it doesn’t cause inflation? It’s only when we want to pay workers who are risking their lives that we talk about inflation,” Sowore said.
Sowore’s comments reflect his long-standing advocacy for improved welfare for Nigerian workers, especially those in critical and high-risk sectors. He had earlier argued that police officers, soldiers, teachers, doctors, nurses and other public servants deserve wages that reflect the country’s rising cost of living.
The outspoken activist’s latest remarks have once again stirred debate about workers’ welfare, public spending and the growing disparity between the earnings of ordinary Nigerians and political office holders.
