Power Clash: Seyi Makinde Faction Battles Nyesom Wike Camp Over INEC Decision

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has stated that it is awaiting the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria over the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

This position was made known on Monday in a statement by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, who expressed concern over recent developments surrounding the crisis.

The faction noted that in the past 48 hours, several developments had heightened tensions within the party, and urged the Supreme Court to expedite hearing on the matter, which is already before it.

According to the statement, the faction reassured concerned party members and Nigerians that it has taken the issue to the apex court for a final resolution, particularly on questions relating to the internal affairs and leadership structure of the party.

Breaking: INEC Recognises Wike-backed PDP Leadership as Factional Crisis Deepens

The statement came shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) updated its records to recognize a National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP that emerged from a factional national convention held on Sunday.

INEC’s website reportedly listed Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.

Ememobong criticized the convention held by the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing it as illegitimate and in violation of a Court of Appeal order.

Indefinitely, List Grievances Against Govt

He alleged that the gathering was conducted in disregard of ongoing court proceedings and accused the organizers of undermining judicial processes.

He further stated that the validity of the convention is now subject to legal determination, as multiple cases challenging it are already before the courts.

The faction also reacted to a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which reportedly granted access to the PDP secretariat to the Wike-backed group and ordered security agencies to protect them while in occupation of the premises.

In response, the Makinde-aligned faction said it has instructed its legal team to file an appeal and pursue further legal action against the judgment.

The statement also alleged that the internal crisis within the PDP and other opposition parties is being influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the aim of weakening opposition voices in the country.

Despite the tensions, the faction expressed confidence that the judiciary would act fairly and uphold democratic principles, especially in matters concerning the internal affairs of political parties.

It urged party members and Nigerians to remain hopeful, stating that the Supreme Court now has the opportunity to protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and reinforce constitutional provisions in resolving the dispute.
