COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION ON CLIMATE RESILIENT WATER SAFETY PLAN BEGINS IN ONA ARA

In a proactive step toward combating climate-related water challenges and preventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases particularly cholera, the Ona-Ara Local Government has flagged off a 10-day intensive community mobilization and sensitization campaign on the “Climate Resilient: Water Safety Plan”, holding from August 4 to August 15, 2025.

The vital initiative is championed by Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) in collaboration with UNICEF, and is being executed by the WASH Unit and the Environmental Health Services Department of Ona-Ara Local Government.

Representing the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Dr.) Kolapo Temitope (Glorious), at the commencement of the programme was the Supervisory Councillor for Environment, Hon. Idrees Olapade, The Director of Environmental Health Service in Ona-Ara, San. (Dr.) Popoola Rashidat, Director Environmental Unit Inu-Kan LCDA, Sanitarian Olayinka, Deputy Director Ona-Ara, Sanitarian Jimoh Sikiru among others, they underscored the urgency of community involvement in the exercise.

“The safety of our water sources is crucial for preventing outbreaks like cholera. We urge everyone to cooperate with the teams, grant them access, and be part of this intervention for the health and safety of our communities,” Hon Olapade said.

The Director of Environmental Health Services, San. (Dr.) Popoola Rashidat A., also echoed the call for cooperation, encouraging all stakeholders to support the facilitators to ensure the success of the project across the LGA.

The exercise includes household assessments, hygiene promotion, community dialogue, and inspection of water sources to ensure their safety, sustainability, and resilience against climate change impacts.
