Workers write FG, seek #300,000 minimum wage

Workers write FG, seek #300,000 minimum wage

The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has unveiled a proposed wage review framework calling for a significant upward adjustment in the salaries of federal civil servants, arguing that “a just and fair wage is possible.”

Under the proposal, the FWF estimates that a federal worker requires approximately ₦300,000 monthly to meet basic living expenses, including food, transportation, accommodation, family feeding and support, electricity bills, cooking gas, phone/data, water and other essential utilities.

According to the Forum’s proposed expenditure breakdown, an individual worker would require ₦30,000 for feeding, ₦80,000 for transportation, ₦10,000 for accommodation, ₦80,000 for family feeding, ₦50,000 for family support, ₦10,000 for electricity bills, ₦10,000 for cooking gas, ₦5,000 for phone and data, ₦15,000 for water and ₦10,000 for other utilities.

The Forum noted that several other important needs—including clothing, parental support, recreation, children’s education, visitors and savings—were assigned zero in the calculation.

This, according to the FWF, indicates that the proposed ₦300,000 monthly wage is primarily intended to cover basic living and survival expenses, rather than provide for a broader range of household needs.

Proposed FWF Salary Structure

As part of the proposed wage review, the Forum presented the following salary structure for federal workers at Step 1 across the various grade levels:

– GL 01 Step 1: ₦300,000

– GL 02 Step 1: ₦330,000

– GL 03 Step 1: ₦360,000

– GL 04 Step 1: ₦390,000

– GL 05 Step 1: ₦420,000

– GL 06 Step 1: ₦450,000

– GL 09 Step 1: ₦550,000

– GL 10 Step 1: ₦600,000

– GL 12 Step 1: ₦700,000
