Will Fuel Subsidy Return? FG Breaks Silence as Middle East Crisis Deepens

The Federal Government has ruled out any plan to reintroduce fuel subsidy despite the recent spike in petrol prices linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, made this known on Tuesday during a G-24 media briefing, held on the sidelines of the launch of the April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Edun maintained that while the global oil market has come under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the Tinubu administration remains committed to its market-driven petroleum pricing policy and broader economic reforms.

This position signals the government’s determination to sustain subsidy removal as part of efforts to stabilise public finance, reduce fiscal leakages, and redirect resources to critical sectors of the economy.
