The Strength of a Grateful Heart in Dry Seasons || By Segun Akinlabi (Egalitarian)

Welcome to another weekly episode of ‘Words From The THRONE OF MERCY’ by Segun Akinlabi (Egalitarian).

Today, let us consider a transformative spiritual discipline that often goes overlooked during life’s hardest battles—gratitude. It is relatively easy to praise God when the harvest is plentiful, the body is strong, and the doors of opportunity swing wide open. But what happens when the brook dries up, when the answer tarries, and when we find ourselves in a season of apparent lack? The human instinct is to complain, to compare, or to question God’s faithfulness. Yet Scripture repeatedly invites us to a different response—a sacrifice of praise that releases supernatural peace and unlocks divine provision.

The Apostle Paul gives us a remarkable instruction from a most unlikely place. Writing from a Roman prison cell—damp, dark, and uncertain of tomorrow—he declares in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Paul does not command us to give thanks for everything, but in everything. There is a profound difference. God does not expect us to celebrate tragedy, loss, or pain as though they were good in themselves. Rather, He calls us to maintain a posture of gratitude that acknowledges His sovereignty over every circumstance, trusting that He can weave even the darkest threads into a beautiful tapestry for our good and His glory.

Why does gratitude carry such power, especially in dry seasons? First, gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance we still possess in Christ. When we count our blessings—the breath in our lungs, the gift of salvation, the promise of His presence, we realize that we are far richer than our circumstances suggest. The enemy of our souls works tirelessly to magnify what is missing so that we forget the God who remains. A grateful heart recalibrates our vision, reminding us that if we have Jesus, we have more than enough. As Psalm 103:2 pleads, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

Second, gratitude is an act of defiant faith that silences the enemy. In the Old Testament, when King Jehoshaphat faced a vast invading army, he did not panic or draft a military strategy first. He appointed singers to praise the beauty of God’s holiness as they marched toward the battlefield. The moment they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against their enemies, and victory came without a single sword being swung (2 Chronicles 20:21-22). Your praise in the face of impossible odds is not denial; it is a weapon. It declares that the battle belongs to the Lord and that your trust rests securely in His covenant, not in your own strength.

Pardon Me?!

Practically, cultivating a grateful heart in dry seasons requires intentionality. It may start with a simple decision to end each day by naming three specific mercies you experienced, however small. It might mean replacing every anxious thought with a whispered “Thank You, Jesus, for being with me right now.” Gratitude thrives where murmurings are starved. While the world chases after the next breakthrough to be happy, the believer rests in a joy already secured by the finished work of Christ, a joy no drought of circumstances can wither.

As you step into this new week, I challenge you to activate the weapon of gratitude. The dry season you are facing may not instantly vanish, but your perspective will be transformed, your burdens will feel lighter, and heaven’s resources will be drawn into your situation. Gratitude does not ignore the problem; it invites a greater reality, the manifest presence of God to overshadow every lack. The Lord inhabits the praises of His people, and where He dwells, miracles are never far away. May your heart overflow with thanksgiving, for the One who promised is faithful, and your story is still being written by the Master Author.

“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” — Psalm 34:1

See you again next week by God’s grace.

Shalom.
