‘Stop Excessive Hike In School Fees’ — EGALITARIAN Team Warns Nigerian Universities
One of the foremost humanitarian Organization named Egalitarian Team of Nigeria has warned Nigerian universities to desist from attacking common Nigeria students through the exorbitant increase in school fees.
The group described the act of incessant increase of tuition fees in Nigerian Universities as a “subtle, intolerable, wicked, and abominable development to education.”
According to the communique signed by the Convener of the group, Comrade (Egalitarian) Segun Akinlabi on Saturday September 16th, 2023 and made available to the newsmen in Ibadan the capital of Oyo State said it is deeply concerned about the recent surge in tuition fees at public tertiary institutions, including the alarming increase at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and University of Jos (UNIJOS).
The communique reads, “EGALITARIAN TEAM aggressively condemns these fee hikes, which directly target students from already disadvantaged backgrounds. These increases threaten to perpetuate the cycle of poverty, denying countless deserving students the opportunity to access higher education. Such policies serve the interests of a select elite while marginalizing the aspirations of millions of Nigerian youths.
“We demand the immediate reversal of these fees and an earnest commitment to ensuring that education remains a beacon of hope for all Nigerians, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Failure to do so may lead to nationwide unrest, which can only be averted by putting the welfare and future of our youth first.”
“According to constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the right to freedom of speech and association and EGALITARIAN TEAM stands firmly in support of the student protests against these unjust increases since its a peaceful outing tagged ‘solidarity for the rights’.
“University Of Lagos (UNILAG) and their The Great Ife Students have our full solidarity. Peaceful protests are a constitutionally protected form of expression, and we condemn any undue force or intimidation by any security personnel against these students exercising their rights because under normal circumstances, education should even be totally free for the massive benefits” EGALITARIAN TEAM stated.
