Sanitation Savvy: Akinlabi’s Tips to Prevent Cholera in Oyo State

As we are now in the rainy season, Oyo State is on high alert for a potential cholera outbreak as the state is feeling the heat already. But Segun Akinlabi, convener of the Egalitarian Team, is determined to prevent the spread of the disease through proper sanitation and hygiene practices.

Cholera is a preventable disease, and with the right knowledge and practices, we can avoid an outbreak in Oyo State,” Akinlabi said during a recent community awareness program. “We must take proactive measures to ensure our community is sanitation savvy and equipped to prevent the spread of cholera.”

Akinlabi emphasized the importance of proper hand hygiene, stressing that washing hands with soap and water is the most effective way to prevent the spread of cholera. “Hand hygiene is crucial in preventing the transmission of cholera, as the bacteria can easily spread through contaminated feces, food, and water,” he explained. “We must make hand washing a habit, especially after using the toilet and before eating.”

He also highlighted the need for proper waste management and disposal, citing the importance of proper toilet facilities and garbage collection. “Improper waste disposal can contaminate water sources, leading to the spread of cholera,” he warned. “We must ensure our community has access to proper toilet facilities and garbage collection services.”

Akinlabi also advised residents to ensure their water sources are safe and potable, emphasizing the need for water purification tablets or boiling water before consumption.
