The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the worsening electricity supply across the country to inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants and reduced water levels affecting hydroelectric power stations.

The operator disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, amid growing concerns over declining power generation, reduced electricity supply and increased load shedding across the country.

According to NISO, persistent gas supply constraints have prevented several thermal power plants from operating at their available capacities, while reduced water inflows into reservoirs have significantly affected electricity generation from hydroelectric stations.
The operator explained that the combined challenges have reduced the volume of electricity available on the national grid, forcing Distribution Companies (DisCos) to allocate less power to consumers.
It noted that the shortfall has translated into fewer hours of electricity supply and increased load shedding across distribution networks, with the severity varying among distribution companies depending on their respective power allocations.

NISO acknowledged the hardship caused by the declining electricity supply, expressing understanding of the concerns raised by Nigerians and other stakeholders over the deteriorating situation.

The operator, however, said it was working towards diversifying the country’s energy mix to strengthen electricity supply security and reduce vulnerabilities associated with existing generation sources.
It further reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability, optimising the distribution of available electricity and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid despite the prevailing challenges.
