The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lamented that the current electricity tariff is more than the new minimum wage of ₦70,000 approved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated that inflation has eroded the purchasing power of the minimum wage, rendering it ineffective.
Ajaero noted that the tax regime, particularly the tax on salaries, is almost higher than the minimum wage increase, further exacerbating the hardship faced by workers. He called for unity among labour unions and civil society groups to collectively address the challenges affecting workers.

The NLC President emphasized that the cost of living index has skyrocketed, with exorbitant prices of rents, transportation, and electricity tariffs further diminishing the purchasing power of workers. He urged the government to consider implementing social safety nets to cushion the effects of economic hardship on workers.
