State Government Warns Residents Over Fake Palm Oils in Markets
An urgent public health warning for every household and shopper across Lagos State!
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has raised a serious alarm over the growing circulation of sophisticatedly adulterated palm oil being sold across major state markets.
Investigations reveal that dishonest traders, seeking higher profits, are mixing palm oil with dangerous substances—including cancer-causing industrial dyes (Sudan and Azo dyes) to mimic a deep-red color, as well as candle wax, heavy chemicals, and recycled cooking oil.
Health officials warn that consuming these toxic mixtures can lead to severe health consequences, including acute food poisoning, stomach disorders, organ damage, and long-term cancer risks.
LASCOPA advises residents to inspect palm oil carefully for excessive thickness, offensive smells, or abnormal sediments before buying. Regulators also dismissed common internet tricks like the “water test” as unreliable, calling on consumers to buy only from reputable vendors and immediately report suspicious sellers to the agency.
