Akeredolu’s Enduring Legacy: Shaping the Genesis of Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun)

Akeredolu’s Enduring Legacy: Shaping the Genesis of Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun)

By: Segun O. AKINLABI

The late Rotimi Akeredolu, former Governor of Ondo State and a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security landscape. Celebrating his impactful life, Segun Akinlabi sheds light on Akeredolu’s pivotal role in the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), a regional security initiative aimed at fortifying security in the western states.

On January 9, 2020, Akeredolu, as the chair of the Southwest Governors Forum, spearheaded the formation of Operation Amotekun, designed to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in combating insecurity across the former western region. Despite initial criticisms, Akeredolu stood firm, emphasizing the governors’ constitutional right to safeguard their states.

The federal government, through the Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, initially deemed Amotekun unconstitutional, citing Section 214 part 1 of the Nigerian Constitution. Akeredolu countered, asserting the necessity of the security agency in fulfilling the government’s primary duty—protecting the people.

Akeredolu’s unwavering commitment to Amotekun extended beyond legal battles. He even pledged to procure arms for the security network, advocating for parity with security outfits in certain northern states.

In light of Akeredolu’s passing, Segun Akinlabi urges Southwestern governors to sustain Amotekun, ensuring the immortalization of Akeredolu’s efforts. Akeredolu’s relentless fight against insecurity leaves an enduring legacy, reminding us of his dedication till the very end. Rest in Peace, Aketi.
