Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi, Okanlomo Oodua and Gbonka Olubadan, has called on the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State to use the first anniversary of the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadanland as an opportunity to strengthen unity, uphold the dignity of the traditional institution and preserve the cultural heritage entrusted to them by their forefathers.
In a statement marking the anniversary, Chief Sanusi described the occasion as more than a celebration, stressing that it should also serve as a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to the preservation of the revered Olubadan institution.
According to him, the Olubadan throne transcends individual interests, political affiliations, disagreements and temporary ambitions, noting that while individuals and political seasons may change, the institution remains an enduring part of the heritage and identity of Ibadanland.
He urged all sons and daughters of Ibadanland, irrespective of political affiliation, social status or personal differences, to place the collective interest of the ancient city above division and personal considerations.
“People will come and go. Positions will change hands. Political seasons will pass. But the Olubadan stool remains part of the inheritance of generations. We have a collective responsibility to protect its dignity and preserve the institution for those coming after us,” he said.
Chief Sanusi also called for restraint, wisdom and mutual respect in addressing disagreements surrounding traditional institutions, emphasizing that personal attacks and bitterness would not serve the interests of Ibadanland.
He said the appropriate response to challenges confronting the institution should be unity, dignity and a shared determination to protect the heritage handed down by previous generations.
He further appealed to stakeholders and community leaders to continue to promote peace and reconciliation wherever differences exist, stressing that the strength of Ibadanland lies in the ability of its people to unite around values that transcend individual and political interests.
“History will remember those who honour and protect our institutions. Our duty today is to ensure that the dignity of the Olubadan throne remains intact so that our children and generations yet unborn can inherit it with the same pride and reverence,” Chief Sanusi stated.
He congratulated the Olubadan and the people of Ibadanland on the first coronation anniversary and prayed for continued peace, unity, wisdom and prosperity across Ibadanland and Oyo State.
