BREAKING: STATE POLICE BILL HITS 36 ASSEMBLIES — THE NEXT 30 DAYS COULD DECIDE ITS FATE
The proposed establishment of State Police Services in Nigeria has entered a crucial stage as the National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed that the Bill was transmitted to the State Assemblies on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the National Assembly expecting the respective legislatures to consider the proposal and communicate their resolutions within 30 days.
However, Ogunlana clarified that the 30-day period is an administrative timeframe and not a constitutional deadline, as the Constitution does not prescribe a specific period within which State Houses of Assembly must respond to a constitutional amendment proposal.
The National Assembly acknowledged the constitutional responsibility and independence of the State Houses of Assembly in considering the proposed amendment. Under the constitutional amendment process, the Bill must receive the approval of at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before the process can advance.
Senate To Conclude State Police Amendment Before End Of 2026
The State Police Bill had earlier been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly, marking another major step in the long-running debate over the establishment of state-controlled police services as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges. The National Assembly says it will proceed with the next stage after receiving the resolutions of the State Assemblies, while reaffirming its commitment to due process, institutional cooperation and strict compliance with the Constitution.
