Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, alongside a coalition of civil society organisations and pro-democracy groups, has declared June 12, 2026, as a day for nationwide protests against the rising insecurity and worsening economic hardship across Nigeria.
The organisers said the planned demonstration is aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to the challenges confronting millions of Nigerians, including escalating living costs, unemployment, inflation, and persistent security concerns in various parts of the country.
According to the coalition, the choice of June 12 is symbolic, given its significance as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a date widely associated with the struggle for democratic governance, accountability, and citizens’ rights.
The groups maintained that the protest would be peaceful and conducted within the provisions of the law, urging Nigerians from different walks of life to participate in expressing their concerns over the state of the nation.
Speaking on the planned action, Falana reportedly emphasized the need for government at all levels to take urgent and decisive steps to address the economic difficulties facing citizens and improve security across the country.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians expressing support for the initiative as a legitimate democratic exercise, while others have called for sustained dialogue between citizens and government as a means of resolving national challenges.
