ASUU Issues Firm Nationwide Directive to Members
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed its members nationwide to suspend teaching duties in any month their salaries are delayed beyond the third day, and to maintain the boycott until payment is received.
ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, revealed this during an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune on Monday night. He explained that the union was compelled to enforce the “no pay, no work” policy due to the inability of members to meet basic needs or afford transportation to work without timely salaries.
Professor Piwuna accused the Federal Government of intentionally undermining the efficiency of the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), which replaced the previously rejected Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS). He argued that the consistent delays in salary payments appear to be a form of punishment for ASUU’s rejection of IPPIS.
He noted that while other public servants under IPPIS receive prompt payment, university lecturers who transitioned to GIFMIS continue to experience repeated delays. According to him, the government has not provided any clear explanation for this disparity.

In response, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) has resolved that members will not engage in any academic work if salaries are not paid by the third day of each month. All branches have been officially informed of this directive.
Professor Piwuna emphasized that the harsh economic conditions affecting lecturers mirror those facing many Nigerians. He reiterated ASUU’s call for the Federal Government to conclude negotiations on the long-standing 2009 Agreement to establish a clear path forward.
