Six Years in Office: BASA Sends Powerful Message to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: May 31, 2025

6 Years of Progress, 2 Years to Deepen Legacy: BASA Urges Governor Makinde to Prioritize Inclusive Governance and Empowerment

As Governor Seyi Makinde marks six years in office, a prominent political voice in Oyo State and advocate for inclusive leadership, Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu (BASA), has commended the Governor for his achievements while calling for greater inclusion, gender balance, and economic empowerment during the final two years of his administration.

In a heartfelt statement released to the press, BASA praised Governor Makinde’s commitment to infrastructural development, equitable distribution of projects across the state, regular payment of pensions and salaries, and his introduction of free and affordable transportation services.

“Your administration has touched lives and revived public trust in government. The spread of developmental projects across all zones of the state, your human-centered policies, and social welfare initiatives—especially the free transport service—have made life easier for many residents,” BASA stated.

However, she emphasized that the remaining years of Governor Makinde’s tenure present a unique opportunity to deepen his legacy through more inclusive governance. She called attention to the low number of women currently in government, with only three female commissioners in the cabinet.

Let these last two years be remembered for gender equity. Oyo State is blessed with competent women across every zone. It is time to bring more of them to the table,” she said.

BASA also appealed to the Governor to remember aspirants from the last PDP primaries—particularly those who stepped down upon his request—and urged him to integrate them into governance structures through meaningful appointments.

These individuals made sacrifices for the unity of the party. They deserve recognition and inclusion. Those who lost elections but remain loyal and willing to serve should also be considered. No one should be left behind. Everyone is important in politics,” she noted.

Furthermore, BASA urged the administration to launch transparent, grassroots-based financial empowerment programs for women and youth to establish businesses and grow into self-reliant citizens. She proposed that grants be channeled through associations and cooperatives to ensure fairness and transparency, while encouraging beneficiaries to be integrated into the state’s tax net.

“Let the next two years reflect a legacy not just of structures, but of people. Let history remember Governor Seyi Makinde as the leader who built unity, amplified marginalized voices, and truly empowered Oyo State,” BASA concluded.
