Some top members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have pointed fingers at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential aspirations as a key driver of the party’s ongoing internal crisis.
A member of the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity due to fears of reprisal, accused Atiku of doing little to advance the party’s interests over the years, while often making situations more complicated.
According to the NWC member, Atiku’s previous defection with five governors didn’t cripple the PDP, and his current 2027 ambition is intensifying tensions within the party.
The source said, “Atiku once left the PDP with five governors, and yet the party survived and became stronger. It’s clear his 2027 ambition is one of the factors fueling today’s crisis.
“His comment following Okowa’s defection was inappropriate and suggested he too might be on his way out. If he continues to push for 2027, those who believe it’s the South’s turn — and others who think Atiku has had his chance — will keep resisting him, prolonging the conflict.”

Likewise, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, said Atiku has the power to bring peace back to the PDP — if he chooses to.
He urged the former Vice President to publicly step back from the 2027 presidential race and reaffirm his loyalty to the PDP.
“This crisis is demoralising members across the country, especially the governors,” Odeyemi said. “Some have already defected, and others are considering it. Atiku should publicly declare he won’t contest in 2027 and dissolve any structure fueling internal division.
