Nigeria and Japan have strengthened their ties with the Japanese government officially designating Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture as the hometown for Nigerians.
The announcement was made during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), alongside a special visa scheme to attract skilled workers, students, and professionals from Nigeria.
For those relocating—or simply curious about this coastal city—here are seven things to know about Kisarazu:
1. A City by the Bay, Just an Hour from Tokyo.
Kisarazu lies about 70 kilometres from Tokyo, connected by the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a striking 23.7 km bridge-and-tunnel route. This makes commuting to the capital fast and convenient, giving residents the balance of a quieter coastal city with easy access to Japan’s busiest metropolis.
2. Olympic Ties with Nigeria
The city already shares a sporting history with Nigeria. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Nigerian athletes camped and trained in Kisarazu. That cooperation is now a foundation for the deeper hometown partnership announced this week.
3. Strong Economy with Local and Global Reach.
Part of the Keiyō Industrial Zone, Kisarazu hosts industries in steel, chemicals, and electronics, while also retaining its traditional fishing and farming sectors. Presidential Aides Visit Japan’s Designated Hometown For Nigerians
Presidential aides, Bayo Onanuga and Temitope Ajayi, on Friday visited Kisarazu, the Japanese city recently designated as Nigeria’s hometown.
The visit came a day after the conclusion of the ninth Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD9), where Japan formally announced Kisarazu as a settlement hub for Nigerians.
Onanuga said the city holds symbolic ties with Nigeria, recalling that it hosted the country’s Olympic team during the Tokyo 2021 Games.
“After the closing ceremony of TICAD9, we went on a voyage of discovery to Kisarazu, the town the Japanese have designated as Nigeria’s hometown.
“Nigeria’s Olympic team camped here in 2021. The video shows the city centre, where the Mayor Watanabe’s office is also located,” he stated in a post via his X handle on Saturday.
Recall that the Government of Japan named the city of Kisarazu as the hometown for Nigerians willing to live and work in the country on Thursday, as part of its strategic efforts to deepen cultural diplomacy, promote economic growth, and enhance workforce productivity.
This was disclosed in a statement on Friday by the Director of Information at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye.
The statement noted that under the new partnership, announced on the sidelines of the ninth Tokyo International Conference for African Development, the Japanese government will create a special visa category for highly skilled, innovative, and talented young Nigerians who want to move to Kisarazu to live and work.
The statement noted that artisans and other blue-collar workers from Nigeria who are ready to upskill will also benefit from the special dispensation visa to work in Japan.
