Oyo Government Declares Tuesday Work-Free Day
The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state in observance of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448 AH.
The declaration is intended to enable Muslim faithful to celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year and offer prayers for peace, unity, and continued development in Oyo State and Nigeria.
In a statement, the government congratulated Muslims on witnessing another Islamic New Year and urged them to reflect on the enduring lessons of the Hijrah, which symbolize sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and unwavering devotion to Allah.
The government further encouraged residents to use the occasion to promote peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and mutual understanding among people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds.
According to the government, public servants and employees of state-owned establishments are expected to observe the work-free day, while providers of essential services are advised to continue their duties in the interest of public welfare.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, a landmark event in Islamic history. Oyo State has consistently recognized the significance of the occasion by declaring a work-free day for its observance.
