A young Nigerian soldier has stirred massive reactions online after breaking down the alleged salary structure of rank-and-file personnel in the Nigerian Army, revealing shockingly low pay despite years of service and dangerous deployments.

In the viral video, the soldier claimed that new recruits earn just ₦104,000 as starting salary. According to him, promotions come slowly, and even then, the increments are minimal.
“For the record, a soldier’s starting salary is ₦104,000 when you first join. After five years, you get a new rank and your salary increases to ₦112,000. At 10 years, you are promoted again (to corporal), and the salary becomes ₦115,000. After 15 years, it rises to ₦125,000, and at 20 years, the salary reaches ₦150,000,” he said.
He added that the “new salary structure” was introduced this year, stressing that before now, soldiers earned as low as ₦50,000 monthly.
The soldier also mentioned a controversial “grumbling allowance” of ₦20,000, which is added to their monthly take-home pay.

But despite the allowances, he lamented that the income is barely enough to survive:
“Inside this ₦150,000, your mother will call, your wife, children, and friends will need help. You will buy data, transport, food, and still try to save. I’m only telling you so it won’t be said that nobody enlightened you before joining…”
His revelations have sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians questioning how soldiers—especially those risking their lives in conflict zones—can be expected to survive on what they describe as “poverty-level wages.”
