Always in the eye of the storm. That is Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshall for you. His stage name is KWAM I. Sometimes he is addressed as the Mayegun of Yoruba land. But, “Oro gbogbo ki se lori alabahun”. Every issue cannot but involve the tortoise.
Even the passing unto glory of his centenarian mother that supposed to earn him people’s sympathy at the time of mourning, it attracted to him bashing and tongue-lashing. The best way to describe such a character is to label him as “Mr Controversy”.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a father and friend of K1 put a phone call across to him on that fateful day. He was to express his condolences over the loss of Alhaja Sadiat Alimot Anifowoshe. In a conversation that ought to be private, K1 decided to put Mr President on speaker, record the conversation and eventually push it to the public.
Some people say that he is probably ignorant of the ethics of privacy when it comes to telephone conversations. But netizians dismissed the excuse of ignorance with a wave of hand. They believe that the intention of KWAM I was simply to show off. It was deliberate, and intended to Buga. Let’s even assume that the consent to record and make the video public was granted before hand, what incensed the people more was the language of address employed by K1. The use of “iwo” and “o” for the person of Mr President is to say the least disrespectful and annoying.
Yoruba people are known for reverencing people that are older in age and more advanced in positions. “Omoluabi ni wa”. No matter the degree of cordiality between the President and the Talazzo Master, it is absolutely uncalled for to address Mr President as if he was talking to his wife, friend or band-boy. Such an attitude is discourteous and ill-mannered to say the obvious.
Before the dust raised by his phone conversation with the President could settle down, KI De Ultimate had committed another blunder. He pulled off the rug from the feet of the Islamic Clerics (Alfas) that performed the funeral rites, Janazah of her late mother.
He did not spared them of his unappreciative intent. They collected their own portion of the wotowoto in adequate measure. In a viral video, he literally and derogatorily referred to them (Alfas) as beggars who had laid siege in his house without being invited. This is not only ridiculous but alien to Yoruba culture. We welcome everybody: family, friends and acquaintances coming to commiserate or pay condolences when we lose our loved ones. But to someone like K1, it was a great burden, moreso when the Alfas on ground would possibly draw out some monies from his pocket.
Even when the opportunity presented itself at the gathering for the eighth day fridaus prayers for K1 to correct himself and make amends, he still stubbornly insisted that there was absolutely nothing to apologize for. Pomposity would not allow him to say sorry to the Alfas.This man called KWAM I is so full of himself; egoistic, bossy, garrulous, flippant, uncultured and overbearing. This is a man that has on several occasions made atrocious and disparaging remarks about his boss and benefactor, late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. This is a man that is despised by both the young and the old in the Fuji family. This is a man that was dragged in the mud for months by his lead talking drummer. Yoruba people will say, “Orire ko kan inu re”. But God has been so kind to him not minding his weaknesses. Whatever one may say or write about K1 the Ultimate, he has enjoyed tremendous and uncommon favors from the Almighty God.
The man should actually work on two things if it is possible in order to redeem his public image. One, his cultural orientation as a Yoruba man requires upgrading, the multiple traditional titles he is carrying not withstanding. Two, what comes from his mouth is always offensive. And the Bible says that it is the negative speech that reveals the true state of one’s heart. But, will this message get to him? I doubt.
