Why El-Rufai Dumps APC, Joins SDP
Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai, has officially left the ruling party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing ideological differences and dissatisfaction with the APC’s current leadership.
El-Rufai announced his defection in a press statement posted on his X handle on Monday. He expressed disappointment in the direction the APC has taken, stating that the party has deviated from the progressive ideals it was built upon.
According to the former governor, the APC no longer aligns with his personal values and vision for governance, prompting his decision to seek an alternative platform.
“The APC was founded on principles of good governance, economic development, and national unity, but sadly, it has drifted away from those ideals. I can no longer remain in a party that no longer represents the aspirations of the Nigerian people,” El-Rufai stated.

His defection marks a significant political shift, given his role as one of the key architects of the APC’s formation and success in previous elections. Political analysts believe his move to the SDP could signal realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
