Dele Farotimi, a human rights lawyer and chieftain of Afenifere, emphasized that Afenifere was founded for all Nigerians, not just the Yoruba people. He made this statement during the 97th posthumous birthday celebration of late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a former leader of Afenifere. Farotimi urged Nigerians to unite under Afenifere’s vision for a better country, citing the organization’s commitment to challenging the current system that has undermined the rule of law and citizen rights.
“Afenifere was not founded for the Yorubas. It was founded for Nigerians. It was founded to save us from ourselves.”
According to Farotimi, Afenifere’s goal is to provide a platform for Nigerians to come together, find common ground, and work towards saving themselves from the country’s crises. He stressed that the organization’s founder had envisioned a united Nigeria, where diverse groups could flourish. Farotimi also drew parallels between the current state of Nigeria and the 1993 political crisis, emphasizing the need for Afenifere to awaken Nigerians to their shared struggles and help forge a united front.
