A devastating road accident in the Kwana Macji area of Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, has claimed the lives of 19 wedding guests who were burnt to death when their vehicle caught fire.
News Reporters correspondent gathered that the victims, hailing from Kano State, were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony in Barkin Ladi when the tragedy struck on Saturday.
Confirming the incident, John Dasar, Chairman of the Pankshin Local Government Emergency Management Committee, explained, “The victims were from Kano and had taken a shorter route through Gindiri to Bauchi. Unfortunately, while people were helping them out of the vehicle, it caught fire and trapped the deceased.”
Dasar further revealed that while some passengers, including the driver, managed to escape, they sustained varying degrees of injuries. The survivors were initially treated at Pankshin General Hospital before being transferred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for intensive care.
Pankshin LGA Chairman Felix Gonung, accompanied by Health Councillor Lengyang Tali, the Police Divisional Officer, and Federal Road Safety Corps officials, ensured that survivors with minor injuries received treatment and were transported back to Kano State.
This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning as authorities work to support the survivors and families of the victims.
