President Bola Tinubu has launched the Nigeria Education Loan Fund NELFUND, with a promise to forge inclusiveness and ensure provision of sufficient funds to sustain the scheme.
President Tinubu spoke on Wednesday at an event to officially kick-start the NELFUND initiative at the State House, Abuja.
For now, the Nigeria education loan fund is strictly for applicants from select public institutions of higher learning across the country.
The reason for this is not far-fetched as indigent students are mostly found in government-owned educational institutions both at the federal and state levels.
There are however plans by the managers of the scheme to factor-in the concerns of students in private institutions who might for one reason or the other be compelled to apply for the loan
President Bola Tinubu who presided over the event to formally flag-off the Nigeria education loan fund, underscores the importance of education, saying it is the greatest weapon against poverty, insecurity and abuse in the society
At the moment, NELFUND has received more applications from institutions in the Northern part of Nigeria as Data obtained by ait.live show that out of the over 100 thousand applications so far submitted, 80.2% are male with female accounting for 19.8%
Facilitators of the loan scheme are planning to stage massive awareness campaigns across the country to further sensitise Nigerians on how the program works to ensure that every part of the country is carried along in what is considered a novel initiative that is expected to facilitate educational development in Nigeria.
