Tension has gripped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a private meeting between former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos on Monday, June 9, 2025.
Fayose, a prominent PDP figure and outspoken political voice, met with the President behind closed doors, fueling fresh speculation about his political future and a potential defection from the opposition party.
Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, Fayose acknowledged the deepening internal crisis within the PDP but maintained that he still considers himself loyal to the party.
“Yes, the PDP is going through difficult times. I remain a loyal party man, but there comes a time when one must reflect on where they can truly be useful to Nigeria,” he said, sparking debate among political observers.
The visit has raised eyebrows among PDP loyalists, especially in the South-West, where Fayose remains an influential figure. Some insiders see the meeting as a potential step toward political realignment, possibly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While PDP leadership has downplayed the implications of the visit, calling it “a private matter,” concerns are growing within the party over the message it sends and the possible chain reactions it could trigger.
Fayose has not officially declared an intention to leave the PDP, but his recent actions suggest he may be re-evaluating his political path.
As Nigeria’s political terrain shifts, all eyes are now on the former governor and the next move he may make.
