State Assembly backs S’Court’s judgement on LG autonomy

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the recent Supreme Court judgement which grants full financial autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas of the Country.

Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, commended the judgment by the apex court during the matters of public importance brought by the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Musa Abubakar (NNPP- Doma North) during the House proceedings in Lafia on Monday.

The Speaker explained that with the Supreme Court’s judgement, there would be speedy development at the grassroots level across the country.

He, therefore, congratulated the 774 local government areas over the victory, while describing the judgement as a victory for democracy.

The Speaker also appreciated President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, for the bold steps they took to ensure that local government councils get autonomy in the country.

He said, “I am happy with the mover of this motion and other Honourable members for your positive contributions on the matter.

“The Nasarawa State House of Assembly aligns itself with the Supreme Court judgement granting financial autonomy to the 774 local government areas in the country.

“We congratulate the 774 Local Government Areas of the country, and we also congratulate the chairmen of the Local Government Areas.”

The Speaker expressed hope that the chairmen of the local government areas would do the needful by executing people-oriented projects.

“We are hopeful that this would bring more dividends of democracy to our people at the grassroots level and there will be an improved standard of living,” he added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Musa Abubakar, urged his colleagues to support his motion on the need for the House to congratulate the federal government over its victory at the Supreme Court on the local government autonomy.

Musa, who is a member representing the Doma South constituency in the State House of Assembly, narrated that the judgement would promote grassroots development in the country.

In their separate contributions, Larry Ven-Bawa, Solomon Akwashiki, Ibrahim Akwe, Esson Mairiga, Daniel Ogazi and Jacob Kudu supported the motion and congratulated the 774 local government areas for getting financial autonomy in the country.

They explained that with financial autonomy, the Chairmen of Local Government Areas would execute more capital projects and initiate programs that would better the standards of living of their people.
