Shocking Revelation: Dangote Claims His Drivers Earn 4× Nigeria’s Minimum Wage — Outpacing Even Graduates

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has revealed that drivers in his company earn significantly above the national minimum wage and, in many cases, more than university graduates.

Dangote made this disclosure on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television, where he addressed concerns surrounding the company’s recently launched trucks and their impact on jobs within the oil and gas transport sector.

According to the billionaire industrialist, each truck creates direct employment for about six people, translating to an estimated 24,000 jobs across the country. He dismissed speculations that the new fleet would trigger job losses, stressing that the initiative would, in fact, boost employment opportunities.

“The trucks we launched didn’t stop anyone from their work. We hear there will be a loss of jobs. Will our tankers be driven by robots?” Dangote asked.

He further emphasized that the welfare package for drivers under the Dangote Group is one of the best in the country, noting that their monthly salaries are “three to four times higher” than the national minimum wage.

“Our drivers earn more than graduates. If you look at what they earn in a month, it’s almost four times the national minimum wage,” he stated.

Dangote also disclosed that the company provides long-term benefits for drivers, including access to house loans after five years of accident-free service. He stressed that membership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) should be voluntary and not imposed on drivers.

The industrialist maintained that his group remains committed to creating jobs and empowering workers across its value chain.

Egalitarian Voice will continue to monitor reactions from labour unions, economic experts, and the public on Dangote’s claims, as well as the broader implications for Nigeria’s labour market.
