In a landmark victory for grassroots governance, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of direct payment of Local Government allocations, stripping state governors of their control over these funds. Egalitarian Segun Akinlabi, publisher and Convener of the Egalitarian Team, has hailed this decision as President Bola Tinubu’s most significant achievement since taking office in May 2023.
In a statement released to the press, Egalitarian Segun stated that the ruling marks a significant shift in the balance of power, empowering Local Governments to manage their own affairs and unlocking the potential for meaningful development at the grassroots level.
“This judgment is a victory not just for the administration but for the entire grassroots governance structure across the nation,” he stated. “Local Governments’ autonomy has been undermined for far too long by state governors who managed their allocations, stifling development at the local level.”
Egalitarian Segun Akinlabi commended President Tinubu’s leadership, saying, “This court action is the president’s most significant achievement to date. I urge him to ensure swift implementation, enabling Local Government Councils to receive their monthly allocations without delay. The people will now experience the benefits of good governance, and council chairmen will be held accountable for their stewardship.”
He noted that previous attempts by the National Assembly to address this issue through constitutional amendments were thwarted by governors.

“With this Supreme Court judgment, the people can now hold council chairmen accountable for how they spend their monthly allocations, ensuring that funds earmarked for local governments will no longer be subject to unnecessary deductions.
The people will demand accountability and judicious use of funds, and I salute President Tinubu’s courage in achieving this landmark reform.”
