There’s a growing rumor that four Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
According to THISDAY four governors reportedly considering this move are:
1. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State: He has already publicly expressed support for President Tinubu, stating that party politics is no longer relevant in his state. In fact, his support for Tinubu has earned him a pledge from Senate President Godswill Akpabio to back his own re-election bid.
2. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State: He’s weighing his options, waiting for the APC to make a move before deciding whether to defect or remain in the PDP and support Tinubu’s re-election.
3. Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State: As a friend of the presidency, he’s considering joining the APC to support Tinubu’s re-election and secure his own second term.
4. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State: Although his initial plan to defect was put on hold due to the political crisis in his state and President Tinubu’s reported displeasure with his handling of the situation, Fubara is still considering his options.

The potential defections are seen as a strategic move to bolster Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 general election, especially given the rumblings in many northern states that threaten to withdraw support for the president’s re-election bid. If these governors do indeed defect, it could significantly impact the PDP’s chances in the election.
