...Is the PDP Truly Ready for 2027?
Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, has condemned the defection of key PDP figures to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led alliance, describing the move as a grave miscalculation and “a political illness.”
Governor Mohammed made these remarks on Wednesday at the Consultative Conference of PDP Founding Fathers and Stakeholders held in Abuja. The event, themed “Reclaiming Our Legacy, Renewing Our Collective Vision,” focused on rebuilding and repositioning the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the high-profile exits — including those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark — Mohammed questioned the rationale behind abandoning what he described as a well-established and historic party for an untested alternative.
“Leaving the PDP to join a party with no solid presence or known structure is neither strategic nor wise,” he said. “We have a legacy. We have reach across the country. We have governors who are performing.”

He added, “We’re not here to insult our elders who have chosen to leave, but we urge them respectfully to reconsider. This is the very house they helped to build. Why abandon it for a party that, frankly, lacks even the basic infrastructure?”
Governor Mohammed acknowledged that some defections may be motivated by the desire to secure party tickets elsewhere, but warned that such moves could backfire.
“Perhaps they believe they stand a better chance of securing tickets, but what’s the point of getting a ticket if it ends in failure?” he asked. “Politics is local. A ticket without grassroots strength is meaningless.”

He urged all aggrieved stakeholders to return to the PDP fold, emphasizing that the party remains the most credible and structured opposition force in Nigeria.
Mohammed’s remarks are widely seen as both a warning to defectors and a call for unity within the party, as political realignments continue to shape the road to 2027.
Egalitarian Voice will continue to monitor developments within the PDP and the broader opposition landscape as preparations for the next general elections gather pace.
