A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) recently suspended Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.
Another faction followed suit by suspending the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade. These suspensions have intensified the ongoing crisis within the PDP.
In response to the situation, Senator Dino Melaye took to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday to clarify the party’s stance.
He stated that the PDP is adhering to a court ruling that prohibits the removal of Damagum. Melaye explained that while Damagum has been suspended, he has not been dismissed, and the party remains law-abiding.
“We are following the court’s directive not to sack Damagum. He’s been suspended, not removed. PDP is committed to resolving the crisis while upholding the law,” Melaye wrote on X.
This statement follows a ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who ruled that Damagum can only be removed via a national convention.
The case, filed by Senator Umar Maina, claimed that there were secret plots to replace Damagum with former Kogi State Deputy Governor Phillip Salawu, which violated the PDP Constitution.

Justice Lifu upheld the party’s constitution, emphasizing that leadership transitions must follow due process, including regional alternation, and declared that Damagum’s removal could only occur through a convention or court order.
