OYO SUBEB Sends Strong Message to the 2025 Newly Recruited Teachers — A Must-Read for All

The SUBEB Chairman addressed the newly recruited teachers and emphasized several important points relating to conduct, professionalism, and responsibilities.

He stated that teachers must maintain proper dressing and decency, and he reminded everyone to show respect to supervisors, learners, and the community. He warned against any illegal collection of money from pupils or parents.

He also stressed the importance of keeping lesson plans up to date and enforcing discipline in the classroom. According to him, lateness and absenteeism will not be tolerated, and teachers must always obey lawful instructions from their superior officers.

The Chairman encouraged all teachers to remain loyal to their work and advised them not to allow political activities to cause problems in the school environment. He highlighted the need to handle government property carefully.

He reminded the teachers that official working hours must be strictly observed and explained that the job must be taken seriously without excuses or persuasion. He also noted that rejecting an assigned post could lead to summary dismissal.

Regarding further studies, he directed that any teacher who wishes to engage in part-time courses must obtain proper approval. He further stated that as civil servants, teachers have no right to speak to the press on sensitive issues such as BESDA matters, nor should they post such issues on social media or visit radio stations.

The Chairman expressed his happiness with how the training was handled, saying he had not expected the old staff to conduct it so effectively, and he therefore commended the teachers.

He mentioned that some behaviours from newly recruited teachers had become embarrassing, and he had received many complaints about them. He explained that confirmation into the service would be based on a teacher’s relationship with the pupils they teach, and he advised that those who were fortunate to be recruited must behave well. He added that the board has the right to dismiss anyone causing problems and that some staff already deserved letters to leave the job.

He reported that some teachers, especially those outside Ibadan, were not attending school and instead employed people (a “back”) to stand in for them, while still collecting salaries. He also stated that some ES officers and headteachers were accomplices in this misconduct. He further noted that some who never went to school still attended BESDA training only to collect tablets.

He clarified that teachers are under the control of the ES and not the HM. He warned that teachers on probation who misbehave risk not being confirmed. He also stated that after the meeting, anyone caught engaging in misconduct would be dealt with seriously.

The Chairman condemned the act of some female teachers befriending ES officers and subsequently misbehaving towards other staff, as well as reports of ES officers collecting money from male teachers.

He reminded the teachers that once appointed, they automatically become NUT members, and no one is allowed to exempt themselves from union deductions or programs.

He also addressed issues related to end-well deductions, saying that if anyone is not interested, such a person is free to leave the job. He further reaffirmed that anyone who is not a TRCN member is not considered a teacher. He informed the teachers that they would receive their 13th-month salary this year and their leave bonus next year.

While speaking on the Code of Conduct, he explained that civil servants must follow public service rules, including punctuality and regular attendance. He noted that some teachers still fail to go to school regularly. He also stated that 27.5% allowance is already paid on top of teachers’ salaries and that teachers receive more holidays and earn more than many civil servants.

Concerning union matters, he acknowledged that unions exist to protect teachers’ interests. He insisted that any training or seminar should include new teachers because they have many more years to spend in service. However, he expressed concern about the character of some new teachers, even though he was satisfied with their competence and smartness. He said supervisors consistently give him good feedback about the new teachers, and he encouraged them not to ruin this reputation.

The Chairman advised that anyone who wishes to know more about NUT should relate with the union, ask questions, and be friendly with them. He encouraged teachers to help build the primary section to a high standard and to create development platforms at the local government level.

He finally announced that there would be a retreat next year for new teachers. He also explained that end-well contributions remain at 7.5%, and he concluded by saying that the essence of the approval form is for teachers to use it to upgrade themselves in their chosen field.

Confirmation Examination

The confirmation exam is a state exam, so zones cannot be changed. Everyone must write it in the zone assigned by the state. We were encouraged to attend confidently — God will help us.

The Chairman explained that lateness in exam scripts is due to logistical contingencies, especially fund-related issues.
