A major protest is currently unfolding in Agege Local Government and Orile Agege LCDA, as members and aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) take to the streets in opposition to the alleged imposition of chairmanship candidates by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
Protesters many of them wearing branded shirts boldly inscribed with “Otoge Obasa” (which translates to “Enough is Enough, Obasa”) are calling for the immediate reversal of what they describe as a blatant hijack of the people’s mandate.
The protest comes in response to the announcement of APC chairmanship candidates last Saturday by the Lagos APC Electoral Committee led by Babatunde Ogala (SAN). The announcement listed Tunde Azeez as the party’s candidate for Agege and Akinola Abiodun for Orile Agege names the protesters claim were imposed and not chosen through a transparent process.
Speaking with Lagos Reporters, a visibly angry party member said: “This is not democracy; this is dictatorship. Obasa cannot continue to treat Agege like his personal property. We are here to say, enough is enough.”
The aggrieved members are demanding a cancellation of the announced results and a fresh, transparent primary that reflects the will of party members in both local councils.
Another protester, speaking with Lagos Reporters, said: “We voted, we mobilized, we participated but what we got in return was daylight robbery. This is not just an insult to our intelligence, it’s an insult to democracy.”
Security operatives are monitoring the protest, which has drawn large crowds in both Agege and Orile-Agege, while traffic has been partially disrupted in parts of the area due to the ongoing demonstration.
The protesters have vowed to continue until their demands are met, insisting that Obasa must stop interfering in local government affairs, and warning of further political consequences if the party leadership fails to act.
This developing situation adds to the growing tension within Lagos APC ahead of the local government elections. As grassroots dissatisfaction grows, party leaders may face increasing pressure to revisit controversial decisions.
