The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood risk alert across several parts of the country, warning residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for potential disasters as the rainy season gains momentum.
In a statement released by the agency, 16 states have been identified as high-risk zones for flooding. These include:
Northern and North-Central States: Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa. Southern States: Bayelsa, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet emphasized the need for urgent precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of potential floods. The agency advised residents in the affected states to:
- Clear blocked drainage systems
- Prepare emergency kits and evacuation plans
- Relocate temporarily if living in high-risk flood zones
- Turn off electricity and gas supplies during heavy flooding
- Reinforce slopes and structures vulnerable to mudslides
NiMet urged local authorities, emergency agencies, and the general public to stay alert and proactive in preventing loss of lives and property.
