The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Lagos State local government elections, winning 375 out of 376 councillorship seats, according to the official results released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The elections, held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, covered all 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won only one seat in the Yaba LCDA.
At a press conference on Sunday, LASIEC Chairperson, Hon. Justice Mobolanle Abidemi Okikiolu-Ighile, described the exercise as peaceful, credible, and largely free of disruptions. She praised Lagosians for their orderly conduct, calling it “a strong affirmation of grassroots democracy.”
She said: “I commend the good people of Lagos State for their maturity and peaceful conduct during yesterday’s election. Your engagement reinforces our shared belief in the importance of local government in service delivery and grassroots development.”
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also applauded security agencies for their professionalism throughout the election period, noting that no major incidents of violence, ballot snatching, or voter intimidation were recorded.
While acknowledging the smooth conduct of the polls, LASIEC admitted there were minor logistical challenges in some polling units, including the late arrival of election personnel and materials.
However, the commission said swift intervention from officials and security operatives helped to contain the issues.
The collation of results was conducted at the ward level for councillorship positions and at local government centres for chairmanship positions, in line with the LASIEC Law of 2008 (as amended).
Certificates of return, LASIEC confirmed, will soon be presented to the newly elected officials at the commission’s headquarters.
The Electoral body also expressed appreciation to civil society organisations, election observers, traditional leaders, market associations, youth and women’s groups, and persons with disabilities for their active participation.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile said, urging defeated candidates to remain committed to democratic ideals.
“To the winners, this is not a time for celebration alone but a call to service for humanity, “she added.
