In the last three months, the Federal Government of Nigeria spent approximately N701 million on foreign trips for First Lady, Remi Tinubu, covering visits to five countries.
This expenditure follows the earlier allocation of N1.5 billion for vehicles for the Office of the First Lady as part of the 2023 supplementary budget.
An investigation by Saturday PUNCH using the GovSpend platform revealed that significant sums were spent on trips to the U.S., France, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and London.
Additionally, N314.2 million was spent on six of the First Lady’s programs within four months, including event decorations and multimedia services for initiatives supporting women, youth, and children.

Critics, including Debo Adeniran of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) and Eze Onyekper of the Centre for Social Justice, condemned the spending as unconstitutional, arguing that the Office of the First Lady is not legally recognized. They called for more responsible use of public funds, urging Nigerians to hold the government accountable for wasteful expenditures.
