Makinde vs Tinubu: Wike’s Insider Reveals Reason Behind Oyo Governor’s Withdrawal

Makinde vs Tinubu: Wike’s Insider Reveals Reason Behind Oyo Governor’s Withdrawal

The Media Aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Mr. Lere Olayinka, has alleged that the political rift between Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is rooted in the rejection of Makinde’s ministerial nominee.

Speaking in reaction to Governor Makinde’s recent comments distancing himself from the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 general elections, Olayinka claimed that the Oyo governor’s stance is driven by personal political disappointment rather than principle.

According to Olayinka, had President Tinubu accepted Makinde’s preferred nominee for the Oyo State ministerial slot, the governor would have remained a vocal supporter of the President.

“If Governor Seyi Makinde’s nominee for the Oyo State ministerial position was accepted by President Tinubu, he would still be clapping for the President today,” Olayinka stated.

Background to the Fallout

The comment comes on the heels of Governor Makinde’s media chat earlier today, where he categorically declared that he would not support President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, insisting on his right to make independent political choices.

Makinde, a leading figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has in recent times positioned himself as a strong voice advocating political autonomy and resistance against cross-party alliances that, in his view, undermine democratic opposition.

However, Olayinka dismissed this posture, alleging that the governor’s political calculations changed after his interests were allegedly sidelined during the formation of Tinubu’s cabinet.

Olayinka, known for his outspoken defence of the FCT Minister, argued that Makinde’s current opposition to Tinubu contrasts sharply with his earlier disposition toward the President shortly after the 2023 elections.

He suggested that the unfolding political tension reflects deeper intra-party and inter-party realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly among influential southern political actors.

Political Implications

The exchange further highlights the growing cracks among Nigeria’s political elite as early permutations for 2027 intensify. Analysts believe the Makinde–Tinubu–Wike triangle underscores the complexity of post-2023 political alliances and the battle for influence across the South-West and South-South regions.

As political actors continue to trade words, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how these divisions shape future alliances, governance priorities, and electoral strategies.
