Deborah Fasoyin, an 84-year-old Nigerian music legend, sat in her cozy living room, surrounded by memories of a lifetime of music. As she strummed the strings of her old guitar, a faraway look appeared in her eyes. She began to hum a familiar tune, one that had become synonymous with Nigerian culture: “Odun Lo Sopin.”
Recorded in December 1979, “Odun Lo Sopin” was a song that had captured the hearts of millions. But despite its popularity, the song’s origins remained a mystery. Even Deborah herself didn’t know who composed the song.
As she delved into the past, Deborah recalled how she first heard the song. “It was at a CAC (Christ Apostolic Church) in Ibadan,” she said. “The congregation would sing the chorus as a revival song. I was so moved by the song that I decided to add two verses to it.”

Deborah’s version of “Odun Lo Sopin” became an instant hit, and soon, people all over Nigeria were singing along. But despite the song’s success, Deborah never forgot its humble beginnings. “I’ve always wanted to find out who composed the song,” she said. “But unfortunately, that information seems to be lost forever.”
As Deborah finished her story, she smiled wistfully. “I’m just grateful that I was able to be a part of the song’s journey,” she said. “And I’m thankful that ‘Odun Lo Sopin’ continues to inspire and uplift people to this day.”
