Just In: Popular PDP Chieftain, Former Gubernatorial Candidate, Quits Party (DETAILS)

Just In: Popular PDP Chieftain, Former Gubernatorial Candidate, Quits Party (DETAILS)

In a bold political move that has sent shockwaves through the Oyo State political landscape, Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-A.A (BASA) a trailblazing politician, women’s advocate, and former gubernatorial aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially resigned from the party. The dramatic announcement came on Thursday afternoon during BASA 2025 Democracy Day speech, which was broadcast live and monitored by Egalitarian Voice. This has sparks widespread reactions across political circles and social media platforms.

BASA, affectionately known for her dynamic grassroots presence and unwavering advocacy for inclusive governance, stated that her decision to exit the PDP was the result of deep reflection, extensive consultations, and a desire to pursue a new political direction more aligned with her values and vision for Oyo State.

Recall that BASA was the 2019 Gubernatorial Candidate of the National Interest Party (NIP), making history as the first female governorship candidate in Oyo State.

“After deep thought, consultations, and careful consideration of the current political realities, I hereby resign from the Peoples Democratic Party,” she said with firm resolve. “This decision is driven by my unwavering belief in the need for a more accountable, transparent, and people-focused leadership.” But her resignation was only part of the story.

In a declaration that energized her supporters and delivered a clear message to political stakeholders, BASA reaffirmed her intention to contest the 2027 gubernatorial election in Oyo State, leaving no doubt about her continued political ambition. “Let me make it clear: I am still in the race for the 2027 Oyo State governorship election,” she declared. “My departure from the PDP is not a step back — it is a bold leap forward. I remain committed to the people of Oyo State, and I am more determined than ever to offer visionary, people-centered leadership.”

BASA’s resignation marks a significant development within Oyo’s political arena, particularly inside the PDP, where she had long been recognized as one of the party’s most strategic and influential female figures. Her exit is expected to trigger realignments and provoke introspection about the party’s internal structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Known for her passionate mobilization of women and youth, her courageous reform stance, and her signature slogan “Leadership with Heart,” BASA has remained a formidable political force since her historic 2019 candidacy under NIP.

Although she did not disclose her next political destination, she hinted that high-level discussions are currently underway and that an official declaration will follow soon.

Democracy is not just about political parties. It is about service, courage, and listening to the people. Wherever I stand, I will stand with the people — loudly, clearly, and courageously,” she added, drawing applause from her live audience.

As of the time of this report, the Oyo State chapter of the PDP has yet to release an official statement in response to her resignation.

With her sights set firmly on 2027, BASA’s next political steps are being closely monitored by political observers, supporters, and opponents alike. Her renewed ambition to return to the gubernatorial race promises to reshape the electoral landscape and reignite conversations around leadership, representation, and governance in Oyo State.
