Jealousy Turns Violent: Woman Gets 18 Years Prison Term for Brutal Acid Attack on Ex’s New Partner

The Mokopane Regional Court in South Africa has sentenced 25-year-old Yvonne Maja to an effective 18 years in prison after finding her guilty of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Maja was sentenced on Monday, February 9, 2026, following her conviction on December 1, 2025. The court handed her 18 years for attempted murder and two years for assault GBH, with the sentences running concurrently.

The case stems from an incident on October 13, 2024, in Mogoto Mabereng, Zebediela. Maja reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend’s home, where she found him with his new partner, 27-year-old Mmapeu Hlanga. An argument broke out, during which Maja allegedly insulted the woman before pouring acid on her.
The attack left the female victim with severe injuries. She was first treated at Zebediela Hospital and later transferred to Mankweng Hospital, where she spent about seven months due to the extent of her injuries. A 28-year-old man was also injured during the incident but sustained less serious harm.

Maja was arrested on February 14, 2025, and initially granted R3,000 bail before the case was transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the judgment, stressing that law enforcement remains committed to tackling violent and relationship-related crimes and ensuring offenders face justice.
