The embattled lawmaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he remains the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly until the “right thing is done.”
Egalitarian Voice recalls that Obasa was impeached on January 13 by members of the Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The impeachment also came in the wake of accusations that Obasa spent a staggering N17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex.
At the plenary session where the decision was taken, lawmakers unanimously removed Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015. His removal marked a dramatic shift in the political dynamics of the Lagos legislature.
Upon his return from a trip abroad during the impeachment saga, Obasa was welcomed back by loyalists at his Joel Ogunnaike GRA residence in Ikeja on Saturday. Addressing his supporters, he reiterated his stance, challenging the process of his removal.
“My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done,” Obasa stated. “If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it. I’m a Muslim, and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”

When questioned about a possible legal challenge to reclaim his position, Obasa hinted at upcoming developments. “You will know. It’s a matter of time. Thank you and God bless you,” he said before leaving the venue.
The political turmoil surrounding Obasa’s impeachment has sparked widespread discussion, with analysts debating the legal and ethical implications of his removal. As the situation unfolds, Lagosians are keenly watching the next moves in this high-stakes political drama.
